Sri Lankan Navy arrested two men – a Sri Lankan national and an Indian national – on a boat at Thalaimannar on Sunday night.

Police here said Sivayogam, 40, of Nuwara Eliya in Sri Lanka, arrived in Tamil Nadu in 2024 on a valid passport. As his passport allegedly got lost and visa expired, he attempted to use a ferry to reach the island nation from Karaikal. But the authorities refused to allow him onboard without the documents.

Then he came to Rameswaram and sought the assistance of Kumar, 45, who owned a boat. Kumar collected ₹50,000 from Sivayogam and took him on his boat from Dhanushkodi on Sunday. When they reached Thalaimannar in Sri Lanka, they were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel who were on patrol.

The police said the Sri Lankan Navy personnel detained the duo and the boat, and handed them over to Thalaimannar police.
