The enforcement squad of the Local Self-Government department on Monday recommended imposing a fine of ₹10,000 on Southern Railway for dumping stale food waste and plastic garbage near the railway cleaning station in Beach ward of Alappuzha municipality.
Officials said the waste was dumped on a pathway used by the public, including children, and that it also polluted a nearby canal. The squad imposed the fine on the senior section engineer of Southern Railway after determining that the dumping posed a threat to public health and environment.
Joint block development officer K.B. Ajayakumar, Pollution Control Board officer Akhil, Suchitwa Mission representative Haritha Kamal, Health inspector K.S. Ivy and others were part of the squad.
