The State Highways Department has started placing steel girders on the pillars constructed for the flyover project at Hope College on Avinashi Road.An official of the Department said eight girders will be placed on the pillars. Each of the 90-tonne girder is 52 metres long and can be lifted and placed only when there is no movement of trains on the railway track at the location. There is a road overbridge across a railway track at Hope College and the flyover will come above the bridge.“The railways has given us two time slots at night and the railway officials are present at the location when the girders are lifted and placed on the pillars. This work will be completed in four days and the girders will be filled with concrete. No one using the flyover will know that there are steel girders,” the official said. When this portion of the flyover construction work is completed, the remaining works on the decks adjoining the steel girder area will also be completed, the official said.
