The AIADMK has urged the District Collector to recommend for CBI inquiry into the alleged irregularities in the illegal stone quarrying in the district to the tune of over ₹1,000 crore.
After submitting the petition to the Collector on Wednesday, Tirunelveli district secretary of AIADMK Thatchai N. Ganesa Raja said the officials had inspected the 100-odd stone quarries in the district after the accident in the stone quarry at Adaimithippaankulam in which four workers were crushed to death.
Even though the inspection had unearthed illegal quarrying, which had caused loss to the tune of ₹1,000 crore to the Tamil Nadu Government, no action had been taken against the quarry owners apart from the ₹262 crore fine imposed on them.
This amount had also been reduced drastically by the Chennai-based officials following the ‘negotiations’ between the officials and the quarry owners.
Moreover, a few hundred crores of rupees had been swindled by issuing fake passes for transporting stones from the quarries.
