Complaining that those allegedly associated with Madurai Corporation property tax scam had not been properly interrogated by the police, AIADMK councillors on Friday petitioned the police seeking expeditious enquiry and recovery of the loss incurred by the Corporation. The concillors, led by their leader, Solai M. Raja, submitted a petition to Deputy Inspector General of Police, Abinav Kumar, who heads the Special Investigation Team formed by the High Court. They alleged that out of the 10,000 commercial buildings in the city, irregularities had happened in fixing property tax for at least 2,000 such buildings. The Corporation has lost around ₹200 crore. The then Mayor, Indrani Ponvasanth, and five Zonal Chairpersons and two Chairpersons of Standing Committees, all belonging to the DMK, subsequently resigned for their posts. The SIT had also arrested several serving and retired officials of the Corporation. The petition alleged that the probe by the SIT was conducted in a manner to protect the DMK men.“Since, the investigation has got crippled, no hearing has happened with regard to the property tax scam in the High Court,” the petition said. The councillors wanted an impartial investigation and sought to expedite it to bring to book the real culprits for recovering the loss incurred by the Corporation.
