Acourt in the northern Italian city of Varese on Wednesday found Riccardo Bossi, the eldest son of Northern League founder Umberto Bossi, guilty of mistreating his mother and handed him a 16-month prison term.

Riccardo Bossi denies any wrongdoing and his lawyer said he would appeal.

The case stems from a complaint filed by the mother in 2016 regarding alleged threats and at least one violent incident linked to demands for money.

The mother subsequently withdrew the complaint, but the case continued regardless.

In January Riccardo Bossi was handed a prison term of two years, six months in a separate case for benefit fraud.
