Gjert Ingebrigtsen, the father of track and field star Jakob Ingebrigtsen and six other children, has been convicted of assaulting his daughter Ingrid but acquitted of other charges of abuse after a months-long trial.

Gjert, 59, was accused of abusing two of his seven children — double Olympic champion Jakob and his younger sister Ingrid — physically and psychologically, over several years in a trial that started in March.

He has been handed a suspended 15-day prison sentence, with South Rogaland District Court in Norway also ruling on Monday that Gjert should pay compensation of NOK 10,000 ($1,011; £1,143). The charges carried a maximum sentence of six years.

The conviction relates to an incident from January 2022, where Ingrid told the court Gjert whipped her in the face with a towel “right on my cheek.” Ingrid said Gjert texted her the following day, “but he only apologized for raising his voice — not for what actually happened”.

Gjert’s lawyers welcomed the decision of the court to acquit him of the other charges.
