The Pondicherry University has decided to open three more community colleges — two in the enclaves of the Union Territory — and also initiate the process to recruit 100 more staff, including faculty in the coming days, the varsity Vice-Chancellor, P. Prakash Babu, said here on Wednesday.

In his first media interaction after taking over as the Vice-Chancellor, Mr. Babu said the community colleges would be established in the enclaves of Mahe and Yanam, and in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep.

“The decision to add three more community colleges was based on the positive feedback from students. It helps to harness local talent and offer job-oriented courses to them. The vocational courses offered are in good demand across job markets. The Pondicherry University is the pioneer in establishing Community Colleges in the country,” the V-C said.

When asked about the appointment of contract workers, including faculty for a long time, he said no recruitments were done in the last few years due to various reasons. “We are taking steps to recruit 100 employees, including faculty in the coming months,” Mr. Babu added.

On the upcoming programmes, the Vice-Chancellor said new courses, such as Master of Visual Arts, M.Sc (Quantitative Finance), B. Tech. ( Environmental Engineering), B.Sc in Psychology (Hons) and B.Sc in Bioinformatics ( Hons) are being offered from this academic year.
