Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Wednesday that Italy was ready to repatriate any Italians who are illegally staying in the United States, meaning there is no need for Washington to send them to Guantanamo.

Tajani was responding to reports that Italian citizens are among around 9,000 illegal migrants that President Donald Trump's administration intends to sent to the US naval base in Cuba.

"The initial information coming from the Department of Homeland Security is that Guantanamo would be used for illegal immigrants from States that do not accept repatriations," Tajani told RTL radio.

"But Italy already told the US administration some time ago that it was willing to take back irregular immigrants in full respect of their individual rights".
