Six Commonwealth nations are threatening to lobby the King over a proposed ban on trophy hunting imports, as Britain is accused of dismissing the impact it would have on conservation efforts.

The government risks a diplomatic row at a key Commonwealth summit this year after African ambassadors felt dismissed when they raised their concerns over the ban.

Representatives from Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe met Lord Benyon, a government minister, last week to demand that the government support an amendment to the Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill that would allow imports if there was a proven conservation benefit.

The pressure has come alongside the revelation that the government carried out an assessment only on how its ban would affect Britain, not Africa.
