Iran attacked U.S. military targets in the Middle East on Aug. 31 in retaliation for American strikes on an island in the Strait of Hormuz, the first exchange of fire for a month in a war that has engulfed the region.

The strikes mark a return to military action after the Trump administration shifted its focus to economic measures targeting Tehran.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said the US attack – which broke a lull in fighting in the six-month war – would “result in punishment of the aggressor”.
