A US federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration acted unlawfully in targeting AI firm Anthropic after it resisted certain military uses of its models, saying national security cannot be used to justify retaliation against government critics.

The administration engaged in ‘unlawful retaliation in violation of the First Amendment,’ the ruling said.

A federal judge blocked the Pentagon's supply-chain-risk designation of Anthropic, calling it unlawful First Amendment retaliation over AI safety
