Health officials believe the infections were caused by an infected Anopheles mosquito arriving in Germany aboard an aircraft. Tests confirmed the cases were caused by Plasmodium falciparum, which is the most dangerous species of the malaria parasite. Genetic testing is being conducted on mosquitoes captured around the airport grounds to trace the origin of the outbreak. Health authorities emphasised that the danger to the local population remains negligible, as the mosquito responsible is likely already dead.
