PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough died when their police vehicle was hit by a VW Passat travelling the wrong way on the A66 dual carriageway. Reports indicate that the home of 17-year-old crash victim Cole Worthy's father was rammed by a car shortly before the teenager and four others set out in the Passat. Police had pursued the Passat for nearly seven minutes due to linked criminal activity, abandoning the chase ten seconds before the crash when it turned onto the dual carriageway. Two men have been charged with firearm and drug offences in connection with the wider investigation, while over £750,000 has been raised for the fallen officers' families.
