Kidney disease affects more than 850 million people worldwide, yet researchers still struggle to recreate the organ’s intricate structure. Penn Engineering’s Alex Hughes is uncovering how mechanical forces and stem cell “recipes” guide kidney development. This work could one day help build artificial kidneys and reduce reliance on dialysis and transplants.
