Rwanda suspended imports of 14 Tanzanian alcohol brands and ordered a recall on 5 August 2026, part of a crackdown after methanol killed at least 50.

Rwanda FDA closed eight distilleries and revoked ethanol import licences after methanol-tainted drinks killed 50 people and blinded 100 more in the first seven months of 2026.

At least 50 people died and more than 500 were hospitalized after drinking contaminated liquor this year, according to the Health Ministry
