Weathering population decline with Smart Decline

An Osaka Metropolitan University researcher analyzed how population decline shapes residents’ life satisfaction in Japan’s shrinking small and medium-sized cities. Using data from 5,645 residents in the national 2024 Survey on Satisfaction and Quality of Life, the study found that population decline was associated with lower life satisfaction, but that specific contextual buffers became more important as shrinkage intensified.
