China now requires government approval for drone exports to the United States. This move escalates the technology competition between the two largest economies. The United States had previously blocked many Chinese-made drones over security concerns. Drones are now strategic dual-use technologies with civilian and military applications. Both nations continue strengthening safeguards around technologies they deem important.

BEIJING -- China has decided to tighten controls on the export of drone-related dual-use items to the United States, the Ministry of Commerce said on Wednesday.

China has announced a series of economic measures against the United States, including export controls on drones and a ban on trade with six American entities.
