The rescued migrants are being transported to Boulogne-sur-Mer, with 54 of them taken to France on British vessels, after an initial decision not to force them onto rescue boats to prevent further risk. This incident, involving one of the largest migrant boats to attempt the Channel crossing, follows Reform UK's recent proposal for ‘Operation Fortress’ to return migrants to France or Belgium, which the party frames as a humanitarian measure. The event occurs amidst fluctuating Channel crossing numbers, with last Wednesday marking the busiest day this year with 752 arrivals, though overall provisional arrivals for the current year are 43% lower than the same period last year.
