As leaders increasingly rely on AI, they risk delegating not just tasks but the judgment, voice, and presence that define effective leadership. Protecting their agency requires being intentional about which work should remain leader-owned and which can be safely entrusted to AI. For any given task, leaders should deliberately choose between four modes of AI collaboration along a spectrum of autonomy, from work that remains entirely in the leader’s hands, to AI-supported work, to AI-enabled work with human oversight, to tasks that can be delegated almost entirely to AI.
