India's urea imports jumped eighty-three percent last fiscal year to meet rising domestic demand. Di-ammonium phosphate imports also rose significantly during the same period. Urea production experienced a slight decrease in the most recent fiscal year. However, di-ammonium phosphate output saw an increase last fiscal. Total fertilizer production reached over five hundred lakh tonnes in 2025-26.

Industry sources say if this becomes successful, India will be the fourth country in the world after the US, Canada and Australia to use ammonia directly in farming.
