The South African government has dismissed as "fake news" a viral document claiming that a group of foreign nationals, including four Nigerians, was planning coordinated terrorist attacks on strategic locations in Johannesburg. In a post published on its official social media handle on Sunday, the government shared a copy of the purported security alert and labelled it "FAKE NEWS." The document, dated July 22, 2026, purported to be an alert warning of "alleged planned terrorist attacks of various sites in the City of Johannesburg."
