A tropical depression is drifting erratically in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to gradually strengthen into a tropical storm that could threaten several states this week.

An area of low pressure in the northeast Gulf continues to show better organization and could become a tropical depression later Sunday or Monday.

The National Hurricane Center said a tropical depression formed as thunderstorms and rain increase along the Gulf Coast.

"Continued gradual development is expected, and a tropical depression is likely to form later today..."

In the Pacific, Tropical Storm Fausto was expected to strengthen and become a hurricane by Monday night, the National Hurricane Center said.
