A special election will be held in the coming months, according to state law.

Lindsey Graham, a politician and attorney serving as the senior United States senator from South Carolina, a seat he had held since 2003, has died.

The South Carolina Republican was running for reelection to his fifth term in the Senate, having begun his tenure in 2003.

The South Carolina Republican's replacement will be appointed by Gov. Henry McMaster, who has sole authority over the matter.

The congresswoman will need to make a decision quickly, as South Carolina law states that a special election must be held Aug. 11.
