Dugan, 67, was found guilty in December for obstructing federal agents during an immigration arrest attempt in her courtroom in April 2025. U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman cited Dugan's otherwise law-abiding life and dedication to public service as reasons for the lenient sentence, noting her actions did not ultimately prevent the arrest. Dugan resigned from her Milwaukee County circuit judgeship in January amidst threats of impeachment and stated her prosecution threatened the independence of the judiciary. Prosecutors had sought a “serious sentence,” arguing Dugan violated her judicial oath, but her legal team contended she had been “punished enough” and plans to appeal the conviction.
