Graham Platner and a small team of strategists behind his candidacy are trying to navigate an exit from the consequential Senate race in Maine without entirely squandering the movement he built, people familiar with the matter said, rather than digging in or trying to find a path forward for his candidacy.

Platner has denied allegations of sexual assault leveled by Maine resident Jenny Racicot as calls for him to exit the pivotal race mount.

As of Tuesday morning, Platner remained undecided about whether to drop out of the race and wants to see a replacement nominee who shares his vision, according to a source.

The Maine Democrat may have met a scandal he can’t beat.
