The incident occurred around 11am on the Mukdahan-Don Tan Road, where a group of 35 monks from Mukdahan province were undertaking a 260km walk to Ubon Ratchathani province. Five monks died at the scene, with another five succumbing to their injuries at a hospital, while 14 additional monks were hospitalised, one of whom remains in critical condition. The boy has been taken into custody, and police have indicated that his parents could face charges of negligence in connection with the fatal collision. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation, though monks present reported seeing the vehicle lose balance before veering off the road, and early reports suggest the boy took the truck from his family home without permission.
