If verified, the 37.3C mark would establish a new UK June record, exceeding the 1976 record of 35.6C by more than 2C, a significant margin compared to previous record breaks. Scientists warned that the heatwave, which engulfed much of Britain for several days, would have been virtually impossible 50 years ago, attributing the increased intensity and frequency of extreme heat events to human-driven climate change. The extreme temperatures led to widespread disruption, including the closure of at least 571 schools, critical incidents declared by several hospitals, and a hosepipe ban implemented in Kent due to surging water demand. Public transport was significantly affected, with Eurostar cancelling trains between London and Paris and Sheffield's tram network suspended, while the AA reported a 30 per cent increase in vehicle breakdowns.
