Ahead of their World Cup match with Egypt, Iran's football team, facing a Pride celebration in Seattle, stated they would only answer questions related to the game. Both nations had previously requested the cancellation of Pride events. FIFA, however, permits rainbow flags in the stadium. Iran's coach emphasized their sole focus is on the upcoming match, despite facing off-field travel complications.

"They're not going to turn off the World Cup on state television in Iran or Egypt to block out a Pride flag in the audience," Cairns said.

The two countries, both of which criminalize LGBTQ relationships, have lodged complaints in the past.
