Donald Trump used social media to criticize Chicago's crime rate and called for federal intervention, while Governor Pritzker responded by mocking his past actions. The University of Chicago Crime Lab previously reported a 30% reduction in homicides through mid-December 2024, but noted the city's violent crime rate remains high compared to other major global cities. Chicago Police Department data shows a 9% increase in killings and a 5% rise in shootings this year compared to the same period in 2025, though overall crime is flat, with significant drops in robberies and burglaries. Experts explain that homicide numbers are susceptible to large percentage fluctuations, and short-term increases do not necessarily indicate a reversal of longer-term crime reductions.
