Chef killed after Russia attacks ship in Black Sea – what we know

Stay up to date with notifications from The IndependentNotifications can be managed in browser preferences.AllNewsSportCultureLifestyleAn Egyptian chef was killed and a Turkish dry cargo vessel, the Victress, caught fire during a series of Russian attacks on foreign cargo ships in the Black Sea, according to the Ukrainian navy. The 58-year-old chef was aboard the Panamanian-flagged Victress, from which eight other crew members, including Turkish and Indian citizens, were successfully evacuated in a Ukrainian rescue operation. Two additional vessels, flying the Belize and Palau flags, also came under fire in the Black Sea but managed to complete their respective journeys. These Russian attacks on shipping followed Ukrainian forces striking energy and military infrastructure on either side of a crucial bridge connecting occupied Crimea and Russia. In response to the Ukrainian strikes, the Russia-appointed Crimean governor, Sergei Aksyonov, restricted public fuel sales across the peninsula, while Russian authorities reported at least five fatalities, 28 injuries, and the downing of 239 Ukrainian drones overnight.
