At least 7 killed, several hospitalised after ammonia gas leak at a seafood factory in Tamil Nadu

At least seven workers died, and more than 40 people working in a private company of a shrimp processing unit in Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district were admitted in serious condition due to a chemical leak on Sunday (June 21, 2026).According to Thiruvallur District Collector S Kavitha, a total of 67 workers were admitted to medical facilities following the incident. Of them, 46 are undergoing treatment at Vels Hospital, while 21 have been admitted to Venkateshwara Hospital. The condition of several workers remains critical.
