The remnants of tropical storm Arthur battered parts of the southeastern United States with drenching rains and strong wind on Thursday, tearing through buildings, flooding homes and launching water rescues along the Gulf Coast.

Forecasters say Arthur could generate life-threatening flash floods along the northern Gulf Coast. But it is not expected to strengthen further.

Tropical Storm Arthur is the first of the Atlantic season and threatens the southern United States with dangerous flash flooding.
