South Africa is taxing its own car industry into decline

South Africa's automotive sector is one of the most important things this country has going for it. It accounts for 22.6% of manufacturing output and 5.2% of GDP. Component manufacturers alone employ roughly 85,000 people and support hundreds of thousands more. The Eastern Cape, where plants like Volkswagen and Isuzu operate, would barely function without it. And we are quietly strangling it, not through neglect, but through policy choices that prioritise looking progressive over being practical.
