During raids, authorities rescued over 400 live cats and found approximately 80 dead cats, with an additional 21 recovered at a separate location, making it one of Vietnam's largest cat theft cases. The criminal group allegedly stole cats from various provinces, kept them in cages, and sold them for around 70,000 Vietnamese Dong (approximately £2.05) per kilogram every two to three days. Animal welfare groups, including Humane World for Animals, praised the police action, though they noted some rescued cats died due to the poor conditions they endured, highlighting the severe physical and mental ordeal the animals faced. While the consumption of cat meat is legal in Vietnam if the animal's origin can be proven, campaigners stress that pet theft for the meat trade remains a significant and widespread problem across the country.
