Mr Tighearnan used a hurling stick to fight off an attacker who was seriously injuring a victim on Kinnaird Avenue. A 30-year-old asylum seeker from Sudan has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the incident and is due to appear in court. Over £18,000 has been raised via a GoFundMe page to support Mr Tighearnan, with his actions praised by his partner and Northern Ireland secretary Hilary Benn. The stabbing incident subsequently led to large protests and unrest in Belfast, including homes and cars being set alight.
