Russia's Foreign Ministry said Saturday that it recalled its ambassador to Armenia for "consultations," a day after President Vladimir Putin warned the South Caucasus country against aligning with the European Union.

Russia has threatened to suspend or terminate a natural gas supply agreement with Armenia if authorities in Yerevan continue to pursue closer ties with the European Union.

Members of a Russia-led economic alliance have warned member Armenia that it could face suspension over its aspirations to join the European Union.
