A humanoid robot developed by China’s Unitree Robotics has made headlines for becoming a Buddhist monk in Seoul. Last week, the robot named Gabi took part in a precept-taking ritual at a temple in the South Korean capital, where it formally accepted five Buddhist vows adapted for robots, including a promise not to overcharge itself. The ceremony is the latest example of artificial intelligence being used in areas once seen as deeply human, as religious groups across Asia increasingly experiment with robot monks and AI-powered sermon systems
