Storm system dumps snow in midwest and threatens east coast with high winds and possible ‘long-track tornadoes’

Severe weather watches, warnings and alerts blanketed the middle of the country as forecasters warned of blizzard-like conditions and thunderstorms.

Successive punches of snow, wind and severe weather are "going to impact the eastern half of the United States," said AccuWeather's Tyler Roys.

Forecasters said mid-Atlantic states and Washington, D.C., were at greatest risk for high winds and tornadoes.
