Eight NATO member nations will be subjected to tariffs if they don't remove recently deployed troops from Greenland, President Donald Trump said on Saturday.

The joint NATO exercise comes shortly after tense talks between officials representing the U.S., Denmark and Greenland.

The troop movements are intended to portray unity among Europeans and send a signal to Trump that a U.S. takeover is not necessary, due to NATO.

The comments show Trump considering applying his aggressive tariff strategies in to his efforts to acquire Greenland.

He had not previously mentioned using tariffs to try to force the issue.

Trump for months has insisted that the U.S. should control Greenland, a semiautonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark.

"This Tariff will be due and payable until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump recently hinted that he may pursue a tariff strategy on Greenland similar to the one he used to force foreign countries to change their drug prices.

"On top of everything else, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, The United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and Finland have journeyed to Greenland, for purposes unknown."
