President Donald Trump said the United States will “run” Venezuela until a peaceful transition can take place after U.S. forces captured President Nicolás Maduro in a surprise military operation. Trump said Washington would oversee the country temporarily to ensure stability and security following Maduro’s removal. Maduro and his wife were flown to New York to face criminal charges, according to U.S. officials. Trump offered few details on how long U.S. control would last but said the goal was a safe handover to a new government.

Maduro and his wife were captured and removed from the country following the operation, Trump said in a statement on Truth Social.

The US president confirmed that the US military had launched a large-scale operation in Caracas and that President Nicolas Maduro and his wife had been exfiltrated.
