Authorities report at least 30 people have been killed in Haiti and 19 in Jamaica as a result of the devastating storm.

At least three people are dead in Jamaica as Hurricane Melissa, the world's strongest storm so far this year, bears down on the Caribbean island nation, officials said.

Hurricane Melissa, a catastrophic Category 5 storm, makes landfall in Jamaica, threatening severe damage and widespread evacuations.

"There is no infrastructure in the region that can withstand a Category 5," Prime Minister Andrew Holness said. "The question now is the speed of recovery."

Hours after the storm passed Jamaica, causing a massive power outage, authorities urged residents to continue sheltering.

“I am overwhelmed by the situation,” Mayor Jean Bertrand Subrème said.
