Hurricane Erin's effects have triggered state-of-emergency declarations in New Jersey and North Carolina as the storm system moves along the East Coast.

Life-threatening surf and 100 mph winds will lash the East Coast, National Weather Service forecasters warned Wednesday.

Mandatory evacuation orders are in place along the Outer Banks of North Carolina amid fears a few islands may get cut off from the main highway.

But the first Atlantic hurricane of the season is drifting away from the continent and will soon be downgraded.

The National Hurricane Center warned that roads in the low-lying barrier islands will become impassable, with waves of 15 to 20 feet crashing ashore.

Forecasters predicted the storm would peak Thursday and said it could regain strength and once again become a major hurricane.
