The creaky door to the internet was characterized by a once-ubiquitous series of beeps and buzzes heard over the phone used to connect your computer online.

The company said the service, synonymous with the early days of the internet, will be discontinued on Sept. 30.

After 40 years of operation, AOL has announced it will soon discontinue its dial-up internet service.

Around 175,000 households still use dial-up Internet in the US.
