From French Polynesia to the South American coasts to Alaska and California, alert systems were triggered after an 8.8-magnitude earthquake was recorded Tuesday evening by the United States Geological Survey in eastern Russia.

The earthquake was recorded at about 78 miles east-southeast of of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
