Japan and parts of the US could be smashed by a tsunami after a massive earthquake in the ocean off Russia.

A quake with a magnitude of 8.7 struck just before noon on Wednesday (12am UK) in the Pacific Ocean, 85 miles (136 km) south east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in eastern Russia.

Waves of more than 3 metres (10ft) were recorded in Kamchatka, Russia’s regional minister for emergencies said.

Japan’s government said it expects waves of about 3 metres on its large coastal areas along the Pacific Ocean and has told some residents to evacuate.

Tsunami alerts have also been issued in Russia and on the west coast of the US – in Alaska, California, Hawaii and Guam.
