It’s a long way from Glasgow to Lahore but Umar Ishaq, 53, was sure the journey had been worth it. After living in Scotland for 24 years, Ishaq has spent the past six months in Pakistan, defending Imran Khan.

“It’s time for people to wake up and realise what’s happening,” Ishaq, a father of five, told The Times outside Khan’s home in Lahore yesterday, as tensions again threatened to escalate over attempts to arrest the former prime minister. “We can’t let this opportunity go. We won’t get another leader like Imran Khan. My family understands why I’m here, but my eight-year-old daughter was scared for me when she saw on television the police firing tear gas.”
