CHICAGO—Chicago officials on Wednesday released video footage of a police officer shooting and killing 22-year-old Anthony Alvarez after a foot chase, the second such release this month.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said they are working on changes to the city’s foot-pursuit policy after Mr. Alvarez’s death, which came two days after 13-year-old Adam Toledo was shot and killed by police during a foot chase.
The video shows police pursuing Mr. Alvarez just after midnight on March 31. He runs down an alley and across several lawns on a residential street. An officer yells at him to drop a gun. The officer then fires five shots and Mr. Alvarez falls to the ground, according to the body-worn camera footage. Another video from a home-security camera shows Mr. Alvarez being shot and staggering into another yard before dropping an object, which appears to be a gun.
In the police video, Mr. Alvarez asks as he lies on the ground, “Why are you shooting me?”
“You had a gun,” the officer responds.
