Body-camera footage showing a 22-year-old Latino man being shot in the back as he ran from officers has been released by officials in Chicago, sparking renewed anger following a spate of policing shootings in recent weeks.
Police said that Anthony Alvarez was armed and surveillance footage shows him dropping a gun as he was shot late last month. The body-cam footage shows an officer chasing Alvarez on foot in the early hours of the morning.
Chicago’s police watchdog recommended that the officer in question, Evan Solano, “be relieved of police powers” while an investigation is carried out. According to Chicago’s Invisible Institute, which tracks misconduct allegations, Solano, 29, faced 11 use of force complaints between 2017 and 2020.
