Every Monday, we check in on how players, coaches and teams are trending across the NFL. It’s bad for Browns fans, again, and not just because of Deshaun Watson. This article is from The Athletic’s NFL newsletter. Sign up here to receive it directly in your inbox. It’s free to subscribe. Week 1 risers and fallersSecond-year head coach Ben Johnson has said he wants to break 2013 Denver’s season scoring record. He might actually do it.The Bears’ 59-37 win in Carolina was the highest combined opening-week score in NFL history. Caleb Williams’ offense had eight touchdowns, 26 first downs and 552 total yards. A Chicago team hadn’t scored like that since 1980.And it could’ve been even better.“When we came in at halftime, it honestly felt like we had left some stuff out there,” tight end Cole Kmet said. “And we still had 31.”Johnson felt he was a mess of a play caller in the first half, when Chicago lost a fumble on its opening drive, committed penalties and failed on a fourth-and-1 from its own 21. In that half, the Bears still scored more points than 21 teams scored in their entire Week 1 games. This offense was that good.If Johnson is to best that scoring record, the Bears will need to average about 35 points per game the rest of the way. Not that they’ll have a choice, given how their defense looked. The Vikings await in Week 2, likely without Kyler Murray, who left yesterday with a concussion. In his debut against the Packers, he threw just five passes for 18 yards and an interception before exiting, yet Minnesota rallied to score 29 unanswered in a stunning, Carson Wentz-led comeback. (Matt LaFleur has now blown double-digit leads in three of his last four games. Changes needed?)As for other risers and fallers, with Week 1 nearly done:📈 NFC East questions. The Eagles narrowly beat the Commanders 24-22 after Washington’s failed two-point conversion. Both offenses struggled under new coordinators. Growing pains or warning signs? And in New York last night, John Harbaugh’s Giants upset the Cowboys 28-20. Is Jaxson Dart as good as his 23-of-29 passing for 230 yards and three touchdowns? Or is the Dallas defense just that bad, again? Dak Prescott was fine, if you ignore one devastating mistake.📉 Los Angeles. The 0-1 Rams took another loss yesterday, placing the newly acquired Myles Garrett on IR ahead of knee surgery. Likely out at least four weeks. The Chargers nearly outdid their cross-town peers, with a shocking 26-14 loss to the Cardinals. Penalties and turnovers plagued the 9.5-point home favorite, and new OC Mike McDaniel’s run-game prowess resulted in just 43 yards for Omarion Hampton. They were just … bad?
